In essay “A personal Cyberinfrastructure“, I found the last sentence of fourth paragraph seems like most appearing to me.

“At the turn of the century, higher education looked in the mirror and, seeing it’s portals, its easy-to-use LMSs, and its ‘digital campuses,’ admired itself as sleek, youthful, attractive. But the mirror lied.”

American higher education system has a goal that not only teaching academic knowledge but also developing one’s skills to think critically and to be able to managing. The image of American higher education is a modern system full of digital equipments. I admired this attractive learning style when I was a high school student. In a normal Chinese high school, most classes were arranged once you enter next grade based on the school’ curriculum,so that students lack the opportunity to develop their management skills. Even though American higher educational system gave students all responsibilities for management of their education curriculum, the learning experience in American University certainly developed some of beneficial abilities that I could not learn from a Chinese University.

On the other hand, just like the sentence said “the mirror lied”, I agree with that the “digital campus” is still not perfect in the purpose.’Digital campuses’ make the school system become more beneficial and useful for students. However, it is not always appropriate for all the classes. For example, a math or perhaps a biology class it is better to interact with the teacher face to face. Students are able to access at the class and get information what is going on in the classes; however, there is a limitation to describe specific and complicated part in their study.

Copyright or Wrong

Presentation on Prezi

Most artists have concerned about to get a copyright license for their works. As we know it is a necessary step for everyone to protect their creations. In article “Copyright or wrong“, Simon, a British writer, has provided the most basic rules for copyright. By reading his article, we can redefine a clearer image of copyright.

What is the exact meaning of copyright? Copyright is a protection for one’s original works, such as arts and scientific discoveries. Copyrights prevent those original works from being copied, accessed or grabbed by anybody.

As a Copyright holder, has the ownership of one’s works and the right to get profit from it. According to Simon’s opinion, copyright is being created once you produce something artistic, it could be a writing, drawing or photographing etc. A writer, who holds a copyright, has the right to recreate his or her writing into whatever it was desired to be, as well as has the right to let other to use that works. In addition, it is also allowed if the copyright holders want to transfer the rights to other people. Even though, writers might get profit from selling their copyrights, they will definitely have opportunity cost of losing their own works.

Basically, copyrights laws in each country are different. For example, a writer can has right to retain their copyright for 70 years long in UK. It is reasonable for people who create master works. However, in U.S cinema and photographic works have a minimum period of protection of 50 and 25 years upon the date of creation, respectively.

There are two type rights that contain in the copyright for writers. According to author’s explanation, First the Serial Right, which is a right for the writers to allow magazines or similar organizations to publish their artistic works. Second, the Electronic Right, which is an offer for websites to use their works.

The copyright laws are not perfect, there are still many vague areas. For example, Simon mentions about the fair use among copyright law in UK.”If a poem has 4 lines, and someone quoted 1 line, it begs the question – is quoting 25% of the text ‘fair use’? A novelist would be upset if someone quoted 25% of their novel! This is why it can get tricky”It is hard to distinguish what is fair use, and what is not. On the other hand, there is no copyright in titles; however, some distinctive titles may be subject to other forms of legal protection, such as a trademark. Moreover, there is no copyright in ideas or plot. The most confusing rule is that HTML coding, web pages, and blog stuffs cannot be copyrighted. For example, if someone copy HTML file from one web page to another web page, this case will not be claimed copyright. And also a blogger does not need to register a copyright license for one blog post, because it is occurred while him writing it. However, if someone write HTML coding and design web page, the idea of page will be applied to copyright.

Vice Online- Internet addiction: Why you need to disconnect

In the section Vice Online, an article Internet addiction:  Why you need to disconnect   reveals a situation that people are getting addicted on internet. We might ask ourselves a question that how often do we check or update a post on Twitter or Facebook?

Personally I believe Social Network services offer us a wide space to get vivid information and a connection with others. However, some people, especially young people  use the online services in an unhealth way. They spend so much time on serfing internet. For example, they often check what others are doing or update what they do daily.

Why do people rely on internet connection more than the connection in the real life? The author explains that the main reason why they rely on internet  is because they may feel lonely in the real life.  People can get self-satisfaction via Facebook or other applications, because they feel someone listen and pay attention to them. This kind of ‘instant gratification’ results them started to escape from the reality and getting addicted on the internet. By over showing their private lives, it may contains potential dangers and somehow damaging their real reationships.

On the other hand, the addiction of online networld will result them lost connection with their real relatives, and finally realized that the fantasy world of internet does not exist. The author claims that “Life is ugly, messy, chaotic. If you spend too much time trying to comfort yourself and control your environment, you’re escaping from the realities of life. ” To escape from the reality can not bring a real joy for anyone, this warning noticed us the dangerous results of online addiction.

Section: Fear and Loathing Online

In the  Fear and Loathing Online section, our class divided into several groups. Everyone has the right to choose their presenters with different topics. It is really intereting way to learn a new lecture and to interact with others.

For section Everywhere Malware, I joined Jay ‘s group and learned about the insecurity is not only happens on computer, and also among our smart phones. According to the article “Googler speaks of mobile security, says anti-virus companies are playing with your fears” Jay explains what can be done to protect computers from Malware, and suggests that ESET could be the best software to protect our computers. Nowadays, checking email, updating a post or online shopping, everything became so much easier after the Smart Phone comes out. People can use the Internet anytime at most locations. If hackers can invade one’s computer, so what is different with a smart phone. Perhaps it is time to concern about our smart phones’ securities. Because most Smart Phones still don’t have strong protection systems. Even the Black Berry  is not 100% guaranteed to protect owner’s information. I agree with Jay, the protection of our smart phones seems necessary, especially for someone who use the smart phone for business.

In Copyright or wrong section, I found this video from Professor Lockman’s Scoop channel.
This is not the topic I chose for my section group presentation, but I would like to share it with everyone.
I really like this author’s creation on Prezi, and learned clear view about Creative Commons.
Unlike Copy right that takes long time to register,Creative Commons seems really convenient and useful. The internet has provided the fastest way to sharing works with others. I believe Creative Common is more suitable in this circumstances.

DS106-Montage

DS106-Montage

This is a new assignment in DS 106. I glad that the professor gives us this new assignment.

The goal of this assignment is to make a montage of one of your favorite places.

It can be your kitchen, a room in UMW, a building, etc.

Frankly, this assignment was very challenging for me. I spent long time to put all the pictures together.

I picked the picture of the univers, and cut in pieces.

And then, I adjusted each one either brighter or darker.

Again, it was so hard to put everything together, especially to find the correct part for each photos.

But, I guess, that is the joy of montage.

I dont know any editting application which can automatically apply a picture into the montage effect.

It would be nice if I know any application that has this function,

so I dont need to spend so much effort to complete this assignment.

DS106-Word

DS106-Word

The assignment requires us to pick one word, select one single typeface,

and communicate with this word. But, it is not allowed to use colors or any other graphical elements.

The goal of this assignment is to select a type face that represents the meaning of the word,

and if needed manipulate the font using different sizes, bold, italics, counterform etc to visualize

the word.

I am inspired by the sample photo, ‘Magic‘. I think the idea is so bulliriant.

I tried to think so many words to make up great ideas.

First, I thought about ‘Shadow’ and ‘Smile’.

For example,  make the word ‘Smile’ looks like smile mouth.

Finally, I got idea from the Christian Fish.

About B.S. 4 century,  fish was the symbol of Cristian.

After Roman kingdom decided Cristian as country religion.

Then, the cross symbol replaced the fish one.

Im not Cristian, I wish the story is correct.

To create this photo, I  simplely add a text on a new layer.

By the way, on the photoshop, there is a function,

which adjust a text into the different shapes, such as a fan, and fish.

DS106-A Whole New World

DS106-A Whole New World

In this assignment, it requires to take a picture of your subject such as grandparents, pet, yourself

and put it into a totally different background in which they appear abnormally too small or too large.

First, I wish the coffee is not too hot.

After I saw this assignment, I thought about the micro human being.

I have ever wished that I could be small like that,

because I would not feel crowded  on Japanese subway in the morning,

and could have free trip by hyding somebody’s bags.

I used my picture when I was 17 year-old,

and changed the size of my photo to fit into the coffee cup photo.

But, one thing that I didnt satisfy about this assigment is that there is no wave around my feet;

it makes the photo little unnatural.

Anyway, I  had fun with doing this assignment.
